Brenda & John Power

Status: Couple

Employed or Retired: Retired

Where did you live previously: Originally from St. Albert, Alberta Canada, we followed our desire to volunteer full time with Families at the Dump. We have been in Vallarta since 2007 and now return to Canada to vacation and visit with our family and friends. Sure don’t miss those -40C winters!

What part of town do you live in: Nuevo Vallarta

Why did you decide to move to Vallarta: After visiting Vallarta in 1995 on vacation, Brenda fell in love with the people. After becoming aware of the families that were living in the Puerto Vallarta City Dump in 2000, we became involved in volunteering with different organizations that were trying to assist these families. Since 2006, we have been committed to full time volunteering with Families at the Dump.

What other places did you consider: None, Vallarta stole our hears

What were the main reason(s) you moved here: Opportunities for volunteerism, giving back to the community. Great weather, the locals are amazingly welcoming to the tourists who visit the area. Safety!

What are the top (3) things you have learned that you think might help someone moving to Vallarta now:

  • It’s not that hard to learn Spanish, even if you are over 50!
  • Vallarta is safer than any large city in Canada or US!
  • Go with the flow in Mexico. Learn to let go.

    Buenos Dios John and Brenda,
We are very excited to learn that you folks will be in the restaurant business here soon. We visit Sweet Thing about once a week when we are in Puerto Vallarta. We have much family that also enjoys their weekly visits to Bucerias for that reason.
    Rich blessings on you both,
    Thelma Teichroeb for John too
