In Canada, Member Profiles, Ontario, Thinking of Moving to Vallarta, Where We are From

Jerry DurhamStatus: It’s Complicated

Employed or Retired: Retired

Where are you living now / where are you from: Currently in Vietnam travelling southeast Asia after living in Australia for 3+ years. I’m a Canadian from Toronto.

Timeframe for a move: Expect to arrive in PV mid May.

Where else are you considering: Colombia?

Why Vallarta: It appears on a top ten list of retirement sites, but standard of living, climate, proximity to Canada/USA, culture, ocean, affordability etc.

How can ExPats in Vallarta assist you: Perhaps with suggestions on areas of PV to live. I’m seeking furnished rental accommodation under $US1,000/month. Suggestions also on learning Spanish from zero, the social scene??

    Hi Jerry,
I moved here in late 2013 and love everything about PV. I have a 3bd., 3 ba., and live by myself. If you need a place the first few days of your arrival your more than welcome to hang in my downstairs bd.rm. The cost (since I do not have an unlimited income) would be $15.00 a day. I have family coming mid June, but you should have a place by then. This will give you an opportunity to make your best choice for your living arrangements without being pressed on something you may not care for. I live about 1 mile North of the airport. It’s a bit out of the downtown area and most people perfer downtown or old town but there are many options and I’m sure that the other expats are far more informed than myself.
I also know of a nice place in old town. The last person that stayed (month ago) there said she paid $57.00 (dollars) per night. It is right in the middle of “all the news” of PV. The phone # is 322-222-0087, called Hotel Yasmin and their email is hotelyasminpv@gmail.com.
Good luck on your arrival and enjoying PV., Trenie Penrod

      Hi Trenie,

Wow, that’s the very generous offer you can’t refuse! It’s very kind of you and I’d like to accept.

I fly into San Diego May 10th and will stay there for a couple of nights to get into the time zone and acclimatize to being back in the western world. Then I’ll head south. I was thinking of travelling overland if I can find a safe, comfortable way to journey. If you have a suggestion, I’d love to hear it. So, it will probably be the 15th or 16th before I arrive in PV.

Say, I’ve been keeping BLOGs of my travels around Australia and southeast Asia. Here are the links. I don’t expect you to read them, but if you peak into them here and there, you’ll get an idea about the guy you’ve invited to stay at your place: http://durhamgjdownunder.wordpress.com/ and http://durhamgj.wordpress.com/ you may have to cut and paste those addresses into your browser.

I guess we’re talking in the “clear” here? Here’s my email address: durhamgj@outlook.com. I’d be happy to do a Skype sometime if you want to meet over the internet, but I look better in person than I do on a Skype screen 🙂

Looking forward to meeting and thank you very much for your very generous offer.

      Best regards, Jerry
